One thing I like about both styles is the light usage. On the other hand, Impressionistic art portrayed day-to-day life and nature scenes. I think the painting above is a great example of this. Neoclassical painters depicted subjects from Classical literature and history… using sombre colours with occasional brilliant highlights” (Neoclassical Art). “Neoclassical works were serious, unemotional, and sternly heroic. Paintings in the Neoclassic period drew inspiration from ancient Greece and Rome. Another difference between Neoclassic art and Impressionism art is the subject matter. Woman with a Parasol - Madame Monet and Her Son, 1875. It is very crisp and life-like, whereas the Impressionistic paintings are abstract. I think the biggest difference between this painting and the Impressionistic style paintings is how “finished” this painting is. The painting above is from the Neoclassic period. Jacques-Louis David, Oath of the Horatii, 1784 Another thing I like about the Impressionistic style is that paintings portray everyday life and scenes from nature. The light in the above two paintings is my favorite part about them, because it feels like actual light when you look at it. “They painted outdoors to capture the appearance of the light as it really flickered and faded while they worked” (Impressionism). The use of light is an important part of Impressionistic painting. The lightness of the paintings from this time is truly eye-catching and looks realistic. This painting is of a rainy day in Paris, yet it appears to almost be lit from within. Paris Street Rainy Day is another example of how beautifully light is used in Impressionistic paintings. Gustave Caillebotte, Paris Street Rainy Day, 1877 ![]() Monet’s painting above is a beautiful example of this. My favorite thing about the Impressionistic style is how light-filled the paintings are. Claude Monet, Impression Sunrise, 1872, oil on canvas, 48 x 63 cm (Musée Marmottan Monet, Paris). The Impressionistic style is recognizable by the quick brushstrokes, heavy amount of paint, and “unfinished” look. Impression Sunrise is considered to be “the characteristic example of French Impressionism” (French Impressionism). The Impressionistic style of painting is one of my favorite styles! How can you look at the gorgeous, abstract brushstrokes of the Impressionistic style and not absolutely love it? The painting above is one that really stood out to me as I was doing my research.
